Prep football: Peninsula takes Glacier Peak to double OT but falls 49-48

Posted by Brian McLean on 8th November 2009

Peninsula senior Alan Wheat tries to take down Glacier Peak senior Tommy Rollins during Glacier Peak\'s 49-48 double-overtime win over Peninsula on Saturday at Roy Anderson Field in Purdy.

Darrian Creamer rushed for more than 250 yards and scored a career-high five touchdowns Saturday night, but it was Glacier Peak quarterback Zack Richter’s 450 passing yards and six TDs, plus a Peninsula failed two-point conversion in double overtime, that brought the Seahawks’ football season to an end at Roy Anderson Field. The Glacier Peak Grizzlies (8-2) outlasted Peninsula (8-2) 49-48 to advance to the Class 3A state tournament. The Grizzlies erased a 35-13 third-quarter deficit and forced overtime when Richter connected with Alex Stepanchenko on a 16-yard screen pass that went for a touchdown to make it 35-35 with 4:22 left in regulation.

Both teams scored in the first overtime, and Glacier Peak took its first lead of the game in the second OT when Stepanchenko plunged in from 1 yard out.

Down to its final two plays, Peninsula scored on third and goal from the 1 when Creamer got into the end zone for the fifth time. He finished with 30 carries for 257 yards.

But instead of kicking the extra point and going into a third overtime, Peninsula coach Ross Filkins decided to go for the win with a two-point conversion.

A toss play to Creamer was stretched to the sideline, but the 6-foot-1, 195-pound running back was pushed out of bounds at the 2 to end the game.

“We were 199 plays into the game, and our tank was on E,” Filkins said. “We talked coming into the game about how we had to play every play like it was our last. In that situation right there, we felt the best opportunity to get the win was to put the game on one play.”

Richter, a 6-2, 180-pound senior, was an astounding 36-for-59 passing with four of his six TD passes to junior Tanner Southard. Most of Richter’s damage was done in the middle of the field with Jack Bonner, a 6-3 junior who hauled in 13 balls for 201 yards.

Glacier Peak, in its second year of existence, will advance to play the unbeaten Timberline Blazers (10-0) next Saturday at South Sound Stadium in Lacey in the first round of the state tournament.
